09 May 09 - ATASA

We have created ATASA to be the parent body for the members of The Guide and VISA.org.za to use and grow into an interactive community for tourism in Southern Africa. ATASA stands for Alternative Travel Association for Southern Africa. We need to design a logo for the organisation so any ideas are welcome from all.
Email: logo@theguide.org.za for ideas & suggestions.

01 May 09 - Volunteering

On the 1st of May we re-launched our volunteering site called VISA.org.za.

Volunteering in Southern Africa (VISA) offers information on travel, your volunteer visa, health and safety and lists organisations in various countries around Southern Africa. If you are already in a program or working on a project you are more than welcome to submit their/your details for addition to the site. Email: info@visa.org.za

16 April 09 - Happy Searching

The Guide has built a new Backpackers Search Engine. We will be using this (and hopefully you to) to list all backpackers, activities, tours, transport and volunteering in Southern Africa. This will make searching for places while traveling easy and to the point. We hope you absolutely love it and find it useful. You are welcome to give us feedback on facebook. To check it out go to theguide.org.za/google - Please encourage all backpackers you stay at to use it and add it as their home page :) Thanks

Through Travel and Error by Matt Hamilton

We have a book written about backpacking by a backpacker, fancy that!
Enormously funny and informative at the same time. He will give you insights into the lives of South Africans and the country they live in.
A must read if you are to brave the adventures ahead.

They say that dolphins are reincarnated surfers. One has to make some religious assumptions in order to believe this divination, but after watching dolphins surf with grace, expertise and enthusiasm, conversion is a possibility.

As I continued my travels across South Africa , I learned that weed wasn't sold by weight as it was at home. Grams, eights, quarters and even ounces don't exist in South Africa . Instead, you asked for what the weed comes packaged in. For example, in Cape Town I bought a "bankie." Being the smallest and most common quantity, the three-quarter ounce bank coin bag was the most popular and convenient for travellers. For most, that amount of dope was enormous and more than sufficient to satisfy one's habits. I was going through bankies as if they were going out of style.
